INEW DELHI: Reliance
Retail is set to enter the travel space. It has recently roped in KL Muralidharan,
ex-country manager, Amercian Express, and Rajesh Gupta, associated with several
travel start-ups, to piece together its travel services business strategy.
Its entry into the travel space could bring it into competition with R-ADAG
group. Earlier this year, R-ADAG group company Reliance Capital picked up a stake
in online travel company, Yatra, which will soon set up travel stores in Reliance
Communication’s WebWorld chain. Sources close to Reliance Retail’s
travel industry foray told ET that the company plans to be in the entire gamut
of travel-related business, offering services like ticketing, hotel rooms, holiday
packages, travel insurance, car rentals, among other products through its retail
outlets. “We are exploring the opportunities in this space,” a company
source said. Though selling of off-the-shelf travel products and
services through malls and supermarkets is yet to pick up in the country, globally
travel-related services are a major driver of retail sales. Indian retailers are
gearing up to sell trousers and shirts along with air tickets and travel packages.
Kishore Biyani’s Future group, formerly Pantaloon Retail, recently tied
up with TravelPort, for setting up 50 such outlets across the country. |
